What are the hazards of mixing old and new UPS batteries?

2022-09-12

After the UPS battery has been used for a period of time, the UPS battery will experience different degrees of loss. In order to save maintenance costs, some users will replace the battery with larger loss with a new one. However, many users do not know that this approach will greatly shorten the service life of the battery. Because there are more chemical reaction substances in the new battery, the voltage at the battery terminal is higher and the resistance is lower. However, the terminal voltage of the old battery is low and the internal resistance is large.

In this case, if the user mixes the new and old batteries in series, the charging voltage at both ends of the old battery will be higher than the charging voltage at both ends of the new battery in the charging state, resulting in the new battery not being sufficiently charged and the old battery The charging of the battery is already too high; and in the state of discharge, because the charge capacity of the new battery is larger than that of the old battery, the old battery is over-discharged, and even the old battery is reversed.

Therefore, it is completely inadvisable to mix new and old batteries in series. In addition, BATTERIES WITH DIFFERENT CHARGE CAPACITIES CANNOT BE MIXED IN SERIES, because when two batteries with different charge capacities are used in series, the batteries with smaller charge capacities tend to be overcharged or discharged, greatly shortening their service life.
