This is a common question among battery manufacturers, especially given how similar these two products appear. The short answer is: physically yes, but practically no.

Let's break this down.

Fitting a standard PE separator into an EFB battery:

It is physically installable. However, without the fiber layer to retain shed active material, debris will accumulate at the bottom and may eventually cause short-circuits. Water consumption will exceed design targets, and the oxidation resistance of a standard PE separator may prove insufficient under the more demanding cycle life of an EFB battery. The result is simple: the battery will fail to reach the expected EFB service life.

Installing an EFB separator in a conventional battery: It also fits physically. Yet it is cost-ineffective. Conventional batteries do not operate under start-stop conditions. They do not require the fiber layer or ultra-low water consumption, so the extra cost brings no tangible performance benefits. You pay more for features that the battery will never utilize.

Conclusion:

Use EFB separators for EFB batteries and standard PE separators for conventional batteries. The price gap between the two separator types is small, yet misapplication can result in substantial after-sales costs — far outweighing any marginal savings on materials.

What about resistance?

Standard PE separators already feature low resistance. EFB separators achieve resistance levels that are comparable to those of standard PE separators. Flooded batteries inherently have low internal resistance, so minor differences in separator resistance have limited impact on overall battery performance. This is not a decisive factor when choosing between the two.

Final recommendations: EFB separators are slightly pricier than standard PE separators, but the premium is modest. Their core functions are straightforward: hold positive active material in place, reduce water loss at high temperatures, and deliver improved durability under positive-electrode oxidation.

Standard PE separators can partially perform these functions, but cannot satisfy the strict requirements for EFB batteries. They are designed for conventional flooded batteries, and that is where they belong.

Do not compromise on separator quality when manufacturing EFB batteries. Any cost saved on the separator will be outweighed by after-sales losses from premature battery failure.

Choose the right separator for the right application — that is the most cost-effective strategy in the long run.

That is all.
